Who Pushed The Hardest At Supertri E? | Garmin Data Dive

Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger’s incredible run prowess edged him to victory over Chase McQueen at the Supertri E World Triathlon Championships powered by MyWhoosh
The Frenchman dethroned the defending champion with a dramatic last gasp sprint finish, but it was the consistency of that run over the Supertri format that was key to his success.
Thanks to data provided as part of Garmin’s partnership with Supertri E, which included the use of innovative products like Tacx® NEO 3M smart trainers, HRM-Pro™ Plus heart rate straps and Index™ S2 smart scales, we can see how the action really unfolded.
While McQueen always had the better of Hueber-Moosbrugger in the 200m swim, bettering his times by nine, seven and five seconds, it was on the bike and run things got really interesting.
McQueen started hard, recording the highest watts per kg of any athlete in the finals of 5.80 in the first bike to get a strong lead, and with a controlled heart rate of 141bpm.
While that meant McQueen biked eight seconds faster for his 4km first time round, Hueber-Moosbrugger reduced the deficit in bikes 2 and 3 to just one second difference between them.
With almost identical transition times of 02:34 (McQueen) and 02:35 (Hueber-Moosbrugger) it was the run that really blew it apart. Hueber-Moosbrugger was faster than McQueen over the 1km distance on the self-powered curved treadmills by nine seconds, 10 seconds and, crucially, 13 seconds on run 3, where he grabbed the dramatic win.
While McQueen’s heart rate steadily rose throughout the event, his final run effort at 176bpm was a spike, while Hueber-Moosbrugger had already hit the 175bpm of his last run in the first bike.
Elsewhere in the men’s field, the highest heart rate recorded was 189bpm by Dorian Coninx in the final run.
In the women’s race, Cassandre Beaugrand was imperious. She recorded the fastest splits in two of three of the three swim, bike and runs to underline her dominance.
Her 4.66, 4.63 and 4.68 were the highest watts per kg in all three bike efforts belying the thought that it would be her swim and run that powered her to victory.
Beaugrand only once had the joint fastest transition, but she was so far ahead she could take her time to execute.
